Today, Day of Restoration of Independence is celebrated in Azerbaijan. On October 18, 1991, at the session of the Supreme Soviet, a historical document - the Constitutional Act on State Independence was adopted. Constitutional Act states that the independent state of Azerbaijan is the legal successor of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic that existed in 1918-1920. On December 29, 1991, issue was discussed in a national referendum, and 95% of the population participated in the voting and voted for the country's independence, sovereignty and independence. In May 1992, the National Anthem of the Republic of Azerbaijan (music by Uzeyir Hajibayli, lyrics by Ahmad Javad) was approved by the Milli Majlis, and soon after, the tricolor flag and the national coat of arms with an eight-pointed star with a flame in it were approved. October 18 has been celebrated as a holiday in Azerbaijan since 1992.

According to the law "On Independence Day" adopted by the Milli Majlis on October 15, 2021, May 28 was declared Independence Day, and October 18 was declared Day of Restoration of Independence.
